The Envelope's Tom O'Neil is mad at LA critics. Why?

Not everyone in Hollywood is united in the spirit of the awards season. Tom O'Neil of the LA Times Gold Derby is a very grumpy gus, having been denied access to the annual awards dinner of the Los Angeles Film Critics Association -- one of the only awards events that has not yet become a PR-blasted media event.

The slight has provoked a borderline-defamatory article on O'Neil's Envelope blog, in which he not so subtlely lambasts the LAFCA policy that is barring his coverage, going on to attack the orgs' membership criteria and validity of some of its critics.

O'Neil claims he's being unfairly (and unethically, if you read between his lines) kept out of the party by LAFCA rules; in fact, I'm told no press is invited in to report on the dinner and awards, so O'Neil's not the only one. But such is LAFCA's right, one supposes. O'Neil goes so far as to cite the Broadcast Film Critics' Critics Choice Awards and Hollywood Foreign Press Association's Golden Globes (now) press conference as some sort of journalistically responsible show of openness on those orgs' part.

But as far as critics' organizations go, LAFCA's certainly as respectible as either the oft-maligned BFCA or HFPA. The suggestion that televising their awards show (for publicity and advertising dollars) would make LAFCA's honors more legit seems silly.

The LAFCA event, held tonight at the InterContinental Hotel, is a private party closed to the public and to non-member press; O'Neil could attend, as he's cited fellow non-member Pete Hammond to have done in the past, if a LAFCA member brought him as a guest. But that bridge seems charred to the ground now, doesn't it?

One wonders why O'Neil has gone to such lengths to attack LAFCA, its awards dinner policy, and membership criteria...he is the Gold Derby columnist, award shows his raison d'etre. Bitter, much? Maybe it's infuriating being left out of one of the only awards events in town, in a season with the cancellation of the Globes, the Oscars a whole month away.

Of course, I'm not one to judge. I've had the LAFCA dinner on my social calendar for weeks myself -- going as a guest of a member, and damned excited about it too. (I love me some critics!) Expect a blog entry about the night here after this weekend. How you like them apples, Tom?

Roger Ebert Drops By RT

Something really cool happened to me last weekend. I sent off an email to legendary critic Roger Ebert, and he wrote back!

Some people go crazy at the sight of celebrities. I'm moving to L.A. soon and I certainly still go "Oh my god that's _________ eating breakfast/pumping gas/insert mundane task here!" [Side note: this happened twice this week already -- Sunday at brunch (Tiny Lister AKA Debo from Friday at Jerry's) and Tuesday at lunch (Pyro from X-Men at Kate Mantilini).]

But really, actors and directors are a dime a dozen, and almost always overexposed...doing junkets and interviews and appearances and Access Hollywood and the pages of People and US Weekly and inflagrante on Page Six...we already know where Eva Longoria or Posh Spice is shopping, and what prison Nicole Richie and Lindsay Lohan is appearing at to pay their brief debts to society. I get excited about a whole other kind of celebrity: the critics!

When one reads film reviews (and interviews, op-eds, etc.) with any frequency it's the critics that become stars -- which is why I love going to film festivals, screenings and parties notwithstanding: it's SO! FREAKING! COOL! to meet the pundits you read all the time, to have a conversation and wonder if any part of your discussion will be put to prose, and skillfully so, in the Tribune, Variety, Hollywood Elsewhere.

Critics, like many moviegoers, are simply film geeks who will scrum in a theater hallway with colleagues and bounce thoughts off each other like excited teenagers, as engaged in lively debate as our own RT Forum dwellers. Sometimes I get to participate in these discussions, and it's the most thrilling kind of entertained-intellectual exchange I know.

To me, and to my fellow RT editors, film critics are rock stars. I guess that's why we love what we do. Luckily, humbly, awe-inspiringly, the scribes I've met are just as enthused as I am about film -- is there any more universal common ground than the moving picture? -- because we are, after all, movie geeks at heart.

All of this is a roundabout way of professing my enduring affection for this community of writers and the way they've defended this cultural appreciation for film art, analysis, and sharing. Roger Ebert is now the newest subject of our Meet a Critic column at RT, and we're awfully proud to have him.

Somewhere deep in the security-gated confines of the FIM compound...

RT's elite team of international editors has gathered in the shadowy covert offices of Fox headquarters in Los Angeles for a few days of mind-melding, trust-falling, and ice-breaking, all in our efforts to bring you a bigger and badder movie website...bent on worldwide domination!

And by "worldwide," I mean here in the U.S. of A., across the pond in RT-UK (where UK editor Joe Utichi shall reign, a jar of marmite in hand), and in the exotic climes of RT-Australia (ruled firmly, but fairly, by new editor Joanna Cohen).

That's right: one RT, to rule them all.

To The Hollywood Reporter: It's Diesel, Not Daughtry (Duh)!

Is American Idol singer Chris Daughtry jumping in the driver's seat for the just-announced Fast and the Furious 4?

According to the film announcement posted in the Hollywood Reporter, it's Vin Diesel who will be appearing again in the fourth Fast and the Furious flick, which currently has no title and no released storyline. But the story, using the above Getty Images pic, caught my eye for another reason ("Is it me, or is Vin Diesel looking...less sexy these days??").

Justin Lin, who helmed the franchise's excursion into Tokyo Drifting, will be back in the director's chair. Also exciting: the return of Paul Walker!!

Walker, who starred in the first Fast sequel (which we affectionately call Faster and More Furious To A Greater Degree) did not appear in F&F3:TD. (Diesel showed up towards the end, I hear.) This tremendous news, then, could mean a long-awaited reunion for the sulky-hunky duo, to which I say: HECK YES!

But FYI, Hollywood Reporter: This is Vin Diesel.

BIG difference!

Meet Your Business Casual-Dressed Editors

Our cub scout editor Alex Vo (the baby of RT editorial!) made his film festival coverage debut this past month, hitting up screenings and interviews with me in Toronto. In honor of this, and thankful for his hard work in TO, I've changed our Toronto International Film Festival promo spotlights to his fresh-faced mug. (Don't tell him! I want to see how long it takes for him to notice.)

This was taken the day Peter S. from Slashfilm and I took Alex shopping for new metro clothes to wear at the annoyingly exclusive party we stood outside forever to get into with a group of snazzily-dressed fellow onliners.
