AAF Integration
Grid Technology for Geosciences (APAC)
The Australian Partnership for Advanced Computing (
APAC) is working to establish an Australian Grid Computing network throughout its partner sites. This would allow users ready access to any of the High Performance Computing facilities. The initiative consists of a number of application support projects as well as the infrastructure development. A number of members of the SEE Grid community are working with the APAC Grid initiative developing Grid Technology for Geosciences based on the open standards promoted and developed by SEE Grid (eg.
XMML,
Information Services).

Computational Service Standards Development
Geoprocessing Service

GeoConnections? Canada (?) posted the attached document to the OGC Pending Documents list with the following commentary:
I have just posted a proposal for a generic Geoprocessing Service interface to the OGC pending documents page. This interface is designed to allow a user to apply a calculation to a set of geospatial data, or run an environmental model that uses geospatial data as input and/or output. This interface provides for a service that can:
- describe and advertise what models it can run
- identify the input data and data formats required by each model
- list the data sources that are known to meet those requirements (some might be local - others might be on the Web)
- run the data selected by the client through the model
- report on the status of the calculation, including completion
- arrange for storage of the output, and
- return the storage URL to the client and/or publish it to a registry
Note that this interface allows for execution times that are longer than standard web timeouts, and the use of custom legacy formats that are not based on XML. The service has been designed so that it should be easy to incorporate into manually or automatically built service chains, such as those being investigated in OWS2.
The specification still needs some work, but when I presented the concept at the EOGEO conference last week, several people strongly recommended that I post it to the OGC site in its current state. I intend to develop this specification further over the next few months, and present it for discussion at an upcoming OGC meeting. I�d welcome any comments or offers of help in the meantime, either to collaborate on the spec, or prototype deployment of services based on it.
