One of our favourite apps for learning another language, the process is genuinely fun. What’s more, all those languages and games are available for free!

  • Duolingo: an incredible app

    Edg:

As I knew Duolingo from my friends I started learning french because I just like the lsnguage. Duolingo is quite helpful with its speaking exersices, listening exercises, writing ones, correcting your mistakes and more. It is really fun and not boring which is a bonus. Unlike other apps for learning languages there are quite a lot of choices to choose. There is also Music learning, maths learning and even chess. You can also add your friends and commit your own friend strike. Thr thing I dont like is that I am not confident to speak. If you want more advanced speaking you can get the MAX Duolingo and talk with Lilly(which i cant get bc it costd money). There is also a SUPER Duolingo which includes: no adds and unlimited energy. For the SUPER Duolingo family you can still get no adds, unlimited emergy and also add your friends or family(you pay only one for max 6 people). For the SUPER there is 7 days free trial and FAMILY 2 days.

  • Fun and useful, but extremely aggressive when it comes to pushing duolingo plus

    random dissappinted guy

I’ve used this app years ago and it’s always had the tendency to push it’s plus version, but I decided to get back into it today and it’s gotten to the point where it’s almost unusable thanks to the heart system. I was having a lot of fun with it until I ran out of hearts. It’s incredibly frustrating having to through a practice lesson and also a 20/30 second ad to get 2 hearts, because once you get to the point of having only 2 hearts you’re a miss click and an autocorrect error away from having to go through the lessons and ad all over again. So you’re technically forced to go premium or use gems, but considering the speed at which you gather them one refill is all I’ve got for the foreseeable future. I can disable autocorrect, I can be extremely careful, but having usage restricted by the amount of mistakes you make doesn’t make sense and is downright evil considering you’re trying to learn a new language. If you’re messing up too bad you can just start over and not have to pay for the plus version/go through a lesson+ad to get on with the lesson. I get that it’s a business, but this is definitely too much. It’s not like you aren’t blasted with long annoying ads throughout the app anyway I don’t think it’s necessary to make it so frustrating to use/unusable.

  • Ah yes, langue learning

    Snobey

I’ve been using the app for about half a year and I can honestly say that I haven’t learned anything up to this point even when using the tips given by Duo. A lot of the “lessons” are just translate this, match this and this, hear this etc with a certain topic like the different “s” sounds in Greek… ok, I get the point of the lesson but it never explains why I should use on type of “s” over the other and to top it all of, before starting a “lesson” there is usually a tip button that usually explains the point of the “lesson”… “usually”. I am sure that there are many different examples like the “o” sounds but at that point in my “learning experience” I didn’t care enough to even bother looking for that “lesson”. To add salt to the injury, why do I want to compare myself with others just by how much I learn every day and by how much XP I earn. In my opinion the leaderboards are just something so unnecessary to the “learning”. There are still so many thing I can list about the app, but it’s just pointless wasting my time on such stupid stuff! To put it lightly, just buy a textbook and study the language you want to learn the tradition way and listen to the pronation and the way the natives of that language talk with the help of social media.

  • Great language app, poor performance

    Stef.G.K

I’m extremely happy with the app giving me the opportunity to study multiple languages with ease. However, the latest versions have become so inconsistent with the crashes! So many crashes! Constantly! It’s becoming a pain completing a lesson. Yes, even one lesson! Even more - when I complete few lessons and get to the next level, the app gives you 15 minutes double score experience for every completed lesson. Well, let me tell you that SO CONVININETLY the app starts crashing as soon as I try to earn my double scores. Sometimes in the beginning of the lesson, sometimes in the middle and most of the time I can’t even start a lesson because the app is out. It’s a real struggle to get even one done with a double score. I don’t know what the dev ops are doing, but PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE FIX THESE BUGS! It is a GREAT APP but it’s a shame it crashes so bad all the time! And why the website is different than the mobile version? Is there anyway to introduce the double score experience on the website version as well? I think it would be very convenient if that could be true. Thank you for your time and looking forward to a flawless working app!

  • The best app for languages

Duolingo is great. The practice is helping me a lot. You can use the application free or as well to be subscriber. There is a choice, but both works good and there are no requirements for subscription. Personally , I can state that Duo has great French lesson and practises. It’s doesn’t have full grammar or all the language rules, but it’s great to practise your words , knowledge, grammar as well it’s great to be a start and support for your teachings. I believe that to learn a new language good and speak it freely you need all components of the language plus considerable amount of time. Therefore every serious learner need to be surrounded daily by learning the new language through books, movies, songs, advices and recommendations from the native speakers of the language , serious studies, grammar rules, “today”idioms, plus a lot of daily practise. In summary, I highly recommend Duolingo for practise, as well I saw some software update that it’s working good.

  • Great app, horrible Free version

I originally subscribed to Duolingo last year with the intention to learn some new language. It was fine and well. The app is very well designed and optimised to hook you. However, I decided to end my subscription this year and now the app is barely usable. The hearts limit is a ridiculous idea. I don’t see how you intend to pursue your mission by putting a cap on how much people can learn in a day. Also, this mechanic is essentially punishing mistakes which is precisely what a good educational system should avoid like the plague. Don’t even get me started on the adds. They are also ridiculous. Playing them after each lesson is infuriating! I mean, it’s a free version, sure, but play them once in a 3-5 lessons if you value your user’s sanity. The fact that all adds are for the app itself means you aren’t after additional revenue but aggressively pushing for sales, which is a dark pattern in my book. This doesn’t make you as nice and altruistic as you claim to be. Please reconsider your design choices and marketing strategy.

Never seen a more better learning app. Everything about is just perfect. But there is something i love the most and thats the design! I can’t forget about the characters! They are so creative! You can learn a language for like 40-50 days! My spanish has never been better! I was in spain for a couple days. We were in a restaurant and i decided to order in spanish! The worker thought i was from spain😳 I do really recommend this app to everyone! I show it to all my friends and i flex my day streak😂🫶 Are we going to talk about duolingo max?! The ai feature where you can talk with a character is the best💪 And i just love when you can get unlimited hearts Bye! Thank you for your time🙃

  • It got worse

I was a fan of Duolingo, and when I started it was a great experience! There were explanations of why something is written, there was the forum where you can ask questions and there was the tree of learning. Also the content was shorter yet I learned faster and better. When I returned to the platform two years ago the forum was deactivated but you could still access it and see if maybe someone asked similar to your question. My main problem was the watering of content - each stage had 5-7 levels, and in order to make it legendary you had to play again and again the same boring information. Finally last year or so they ditched the tree model and gave us the linear structure, the forum is gone, no longer I am able to access it, there are no explanations on why is something the way it is. No rules. The Guidebook is just sentences of how to write, not why to write it like that. Honestly it is just as a bad teacher would be. To learn a language proficiently you will need to know why is this not that. But to learn a language and be able to understand and barely speak properly use Duolingo!

  • Let us refill hearts again

    didilalala00

Overall a decent free method to learn some language basics and the characters are cute. Some of its aspects have gotten better over time (such as aligning some language sections with CEFR), while other aspects have gotten worse. For example, I think the monthly badge quest and the leagues gamify the app a bit much. But if it works for some, fine. Some time ago, the option of unlimited practice was removed and replaced with "you can only practice 5 times, then once you're full of hearts, you have to make progress or else". It wasn't a good change (because I sometimes don't feel confident enough yet to move down the path), but I could live with the then-new situation. But then, another recent unfortunate development was that they simply took away any option to refill hearts unless we pay premium or get to zero hearts. I don't find any point in doing a lesson anymore when I'm at 1-2 hearts, because if I make as little as one mistake on the last question, all progress is lost. I just get demotivated and close the app. It was much better to do some practice lessons and get my hearts up to 4-5 (as per the previous mechanics), so that I could continue progressing, now it's not too great.I understand they are a business and want to make us all pay for it, but using this sneaky practice makes their "noble goal of free education for all" less credible now. I hope they bring back the "practice to refill hearts" option, because I was ready to buy Max to talk to Lily, but right after my payday I was forced to update the app and I saw the new "feature" immediately.

  • Language barrier

The app is great overall — intuitive, useful, and very well-designed. However, I’m giving it 4 stars instead of 5 because it doesn’t support the Bulgarian language. For native Bulgarian speakers like me, this is a significant limitation. In my case, I use English as a second language, and adding a third one without any support in my native language (Bulgarian) makes things even harder. Also, Bulgarian has grammatical gender (like masculine, feminine, and neuter), which doesn’t exist in English. This means that sometimes, translations or explanations lose their full meaning or cannot be expressed accurately. It would be very helpful if the app included Bulgarian, especially for grammar-sensitive content.I really hope to see Bulgarian language support in future updates!
