On European tour, Venezuela's Chavez meets France's Chirac
Dateline: PARIS Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, visiting Paris while tensions were rising at home, accused his nation's opposition leaders of trying everything they can to raise international doubts about his leadership.
During a brief stop in Paris, Chavez spoke with French President Jacques Chirac on Tuesday at the presidential Elysee Palace. A European tour will take Chavez to Italy, Britain and Norway before he returns to his edgy nation on Saturday.
Venezuela's opposition business and labor leaders have planned a general strike starting Oct. 21 in reaction to Chavez's refusal to call early elections.
