Japan's unemployment rate edged up to 5.2 percent in October, up 0.1 percentage point from the previous month, despite recent signs of an emerging economic recovery centered on growing exports and rebounding corporate profits.

Friday's ministry data showed that 3.43 million people were unemployed in October, down 190,000 from the same month a year ago. Ministry official Michio Matsumura said the numbers, although better than last year's, had slightly worsened from the relatively cheerful picture painted a month ago.

Jobs were lost in the restaurant, hotel and retail sectors, hurting the labor market for women, he said. …
