Anne Hathaway’s ‘Verity’ gets soundtracked by Oscar winner Volker Bertelmann: Listen to the 1st cut

An Oscar winner like Anne Hathaway requires some awards-caliber music.
Hathaway plays the titular author with a secret past in Verity, director Michael Showalter's adaptation of Colleen Hoover's psychological thriller. Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett co-star in the film, which is out Friday. Also being released on Friday is the Verity soundtrack from Oscar-winning composer Volker Bertelmann and Lakeshore Records. Gold Derby has the exclusive first listen to the opening cut, "A Miracle," which sets the tone for the twisty plot through its interplay of strings and piano, packing intrigue, suspense, and heightened emotion into two minutes.
"I felt the film should be based on a longer musical theme that I'd composed right at the start, when I saw the first shot of the house where Verity lives, and I used this theme in many variations throughout the film," says Bertelmann. "I also really enjoyed the horror aspect of the film, which allowed me to experiment with a wide range of instruments."
Bertelmann won his Academy Award for Best Original Score for All Quiet on the Western Front, and was also nominated for Conclave and Lion; in 2025, he received an Emmy nod for his main title to Dune: Prophecy. Bertelmann has had a busy 2026: in addition to Verity, he composed the music for the upcoming DC Studios horror film Clayface, as well as The Uprising, Bunker, and Pressure.
