by Scott Collura

Summary: We first heard about a potential Shadow of the Colossus movie over a year ago, but since then there hasn't been much news to report on the planned game adaptation. I would rather there not be a movie, and particularly not a franchise, it would ruin what made the original great

ugh. I don't care how "good" he feels about the project, I hope this movie never gets made. It's PERFECT as a game, but would be lame as a movie.

I guess I just want the millions of mainstream people out there to really see video games as an art form, and the intensity they can present. Sadly, that will mos likely never happen >.>

Please. I beg of the movie studios to not ruin this game!! The only director I can see doing this game true service is Guillermo del Toro!

Don't do it...
Shadow of the Colossus is brilliant for it's dark, silent narrative. Adding a conventional narrative to the game completely kills it. I can't believe Sony (Or whoever the hell owns the rights.) is letting them do this.

OMG no, they cant capture the magic. The thing that made SOTC awesome is the sense of Isolation and how the story was just presented in such a good way with so little prompting.

Part of the aura of these games is the lack of explanation. I feel like creating a movie that lays out a story will diminish some of that mystery. I agree that the Team Ico games should just be left alone by the film industry. I can't help but see the cheap special effects in my head now.

They aren't "fucking" with the game. They are making a movie. Don't watch the movie if you are that scared of it being bad. Just play the game. No one if making you watch the movie. Comments like yours are ignorant and pointless.

I will very much be looking forward to this. I just hope they make the movie A LOT like the game, because I would love to share the feeling I got playing the game with my friends and family who didn't play the game so they can feel the awesome epicness of shadow of the colossus the same way I did when I first played it.

I remember that game so well. The very first colossus when you climb up that ridge is so epic. It made me fall all the way back down when I first saw it. I don't care if the movie turns out bad. I would just see it out of respect for someone just trying to attempt something so unbelievably epic.

It's already a beautiful game. What would be gained by making a weaker film imitation of it?

I think gamers think that having their favorite games made into movies will somehow give the games more credibility as higher culture. Stop thinking that way. Shadow of the Colossus is already higher culture on its own merits.

This is probably the most over hyped game in history. There was no substance whatsoever. You go from one big boss to the next and climb giant hairy things. How in God's name does this make for a good movie premiss?

Does this guy understand, that anyone who loves this game, DOESN'T want it to be a film. It's made as a piece of art that can only work as a game. DON'T make this film, it is the king of stupid ideas.

It's not over hyped you idiot, it's an amazing game, one of my all-time favorites. Just because you didn't care for it doesn't mean it's "over hyped".

That said, a SotC movie does sound like a bad idea.

SOTC was rated highly because of its atmosphere and beautiful world(even though it was mostly barren). Then you had the best 16 boss fights in history in 1 game. They were all innovative and did things no other games did before it.

As for a movie adaption...good luck pulling that off. Theres no way they can fit 16 bosses into it. 3 or 4 sounds more realistic.

I think the movie will give us tons of backstory of the collosi, the world, the spirits and wander. Then he does his adventure thingy and kills like 4 of them or something.

I don't see the problem with this movie being made. No one is making you watch this thing if it does come out anyway.

Rant time, and I know I'm opening myself up to get torched, but I don't care...

ENOUGH with this "this is ART" stuff, like this is the ONLY GAME, and the ONLY DEVELOPER, that does anything "artful" in video games.

ALL GAMES ARE ART. Yes, ALL OF THEM. Even Halo and COD and Madden and Grand Theft Auto. ALL OF THEM.

Ueda's games are NO MORE "ARTFUL" THAN ANYONE ELSE'S.

I got more of an "artistic message" playing NO MORE HEROES than I did playing Shadow of the Colossus, and BOTH games have "barren empty overworlds". And which one got raked over the coals for that? Hint: it isn't the one where you ride a horse. Maybe if Suda 51 just eliminated all the random thugs and you only fought the 10 assassins, and didn't have to do any of the grunt work to raise money, that game would be deified just as much as Shadow of the Colossus is. Because tell me that No More Heroes that way isn't just Shadow of the Colossus with a lightsaber, a motorcycle and takes place in a city.

ARTISTS design the game, ARTISTS do all the character modeling and texturing, and it's in ALL VIDEO GAMES. So PLEASE tell me how THIS game is "art" and NOTHING ELSE IS!?

Rant over. Again, I know I'm setting myself up for flaming because I don't bend over for Ueda, but it is what it is.

go f**k yourself.
alright, your such a terrible writer that i can't tell when your trying to be sarcastic, and when the CAPS LOCK IS FOR DRAMATIC EFFECTZ!, but indulge me. from what i could discern from your rant, your saying that everyone who likes Shadow of the Colossus and doesn't want the movie to be made is saying that only Team Ico games are art? i don't find that to be true at all. that generalization is way off base. i doubt you could find more than a handful of people who think that. if that's the impression you get from reading about people's reaction to this movie being made, then maybe you just can't read very well.

and on the difference between Shadow and No More Heroes...these couldn't be any more different. if you were to find analogues to both of these games in film genres, Colossus would be equivalent to the niche, quiet little art-house movie, and No More Heroes would be an exploitation movie. and i love my fair share of exploitation movies, and they are art, but they are completely different. Shadow is all about atmosphere, subtext, and metaphor. No More Heroes is about watching tits shake and heads roll.
Shadow's empty world is foreboding. No More Heroe's world is empty because of poor design. if you don't know the difference, then you really are an idiot.

Thanks for the snappy comment. I get it, I'm an idiot because I don't worship at the altar of Fumito Ueda, I got that a million times already.

I just wanna know why Ueda's games are treated like holy relics and F*#$ you if you don't treat it with absolute reverence.

Is it a good game? It's not bad. But it's not even nearly as godlike as everyone makes it out to be, because I can say no other game designer, and no other game could possibly get away with the stuff Ueda is allowed to do in his games for the sake of "art".

And nobody can possibly tell me I'm wrong there. Every game has detractors, but not this one, and anybody who even attempts to say that this game isn't teh best evar is destroyed immediately afterwards by people who treat it like a personal attack.

I like that the very first thing you said to me was "go F^&$ (myself)". Stay classy, sir.

All I want to know is why I can't make a criticism about this game. It isn't perfect, not by a long shot, but people defend this game like God Himself made it and I'm damned to an eternity in hell because *gasp* I DON'T LIKE IT.

I thought that the game was boring. The bosses are honestly not some grandiose highly intelligent puzzle like everyone thinks they are, and riding around an empty barren wasteland isn't fun, and it's the EXACT SAME THING other games get trashed for. "But this was part of the design! Ueda had an artistic vision! You're a retard because you don't get it!"

I guess I don't. But how about this: what if I made a game that didn't have ANY bosses at all? What if you were a Mike Haggar type character going all vigilante in the streets, and all you did was beat up low level criminals? No serial killers or criminal masterminds or anything else that was considered a boss? Would you wanna play a game like that with no bosses?

But wait! My game has an artistic message! There are no bosses in the game because you are your own boss! You can do what you want, go where you wanna go! You don't have to do what the game tells you to, only it kinda sorta eventually makes you do it anyway?

Is that "art"? Or is that the stupidest thing you ever heard? But I have meaning behind it, so it's my artistic vision, so F you if you don't understand it.

See, I can be like that too.

i told you to go f**k yourself because you're a pretentious prick who conveys emotions with the caps lock, not because you don't get it...which you don't. it's your hyperbolism that i have an issue with.
maybe you didn't know what you were getting into when you first played the game, and you weren't prepared for it? a lot of people don't like 2001: A Space Odyssey. they say it's boring. who am i to argue? i think it's great.
however: there are people who don't like the movie, who, whenever the movie is brought up, love to interject with such a condescending tone that they hate the movie and think it's dumb. they don't simply dislike the movie -- they mock the idea that someone might see the movie and have it resonate with them on an emotional level.
to them, i say, "go f**k yourself."

So I'm a pretentious prick because I use caps lock? If you can devise a better way for me to convey my emotions, feel free to tell me what it is.

I think that the fans of this game are like hoity toity arthouse nuts who think that the only thing that is art is what they believe it to be. If that's not elitist, I don't know what is.

I have a friend (a close one, too) who is pissed at me because I don't get this game, so it's not just random people like you.

Just because I don't get it doesn't make me an idiot; I know what the intent was, I just don't like it because I feel like fun was sacrificed to make an "artistic message". I didn't need the whole "lonely hero/isolation" stuff drilled into my head riding a horse through the deadest overworld in the history of video games. It wasn't FUN. That's what it came down to, I didn't have fun playing the game, and I don't play games that I don't think are fun. That's all.

At the end of the day, I could care less what the message of the game is as long as I have fun playing it. Which is why certain games sell as much as they do and why games like this have the cult status that they have. Don't get me wrong, I like some cult status games, just not THIS ONE. Or Ico.

I'm finished. Now I have to mend a friendship that got strained arguing over THIS GAME. How's that for invoking an emotional response?

And I'm a girl, by the way... maaaaaaaaan. I would've hoped that the screen name would've tipped that off just a little bit.

I'm sorry that you think I'm a pretentious prick because oh noes, I used caps lock. Sorry.

I'm also sorry that a close friend of mine is quite pissed off at me because I don't feel like this game is a life changing experience.

I'm sorry, but at the end of the day, for me, the game wasn't FUN. I know what the creator's intent was by creating the deadest, most barren overworld in the history of videogames, but it's a shame that fun was sacrificed for it. I play games to have fun, not to find some deep philosophical message. For me personally, fun comes first, everything else is icing on the cake. Which is why I still play old Mario, Sonic and Mega Man games.

I like cult status games, just not this one. I just don't agree with Ueda's vision on what games are supposed to be. It's my opinion. But it's obviously one I'm not allowed to share on the internet because then I'm just seen as a f&$%ing idiot.

So this idiot will go play some games that she thinks are fun to play. If I want to wander around an overworld and do nothing, I have GTA3 and NMH for that. And if I want to break up the monotony and do something in those games, I can just as easily do that too. Just my opinion.

lol, your friend sounds 14.

on caps lock: you've really never heard that CAPS LOCK is a considered a no-no? common internet etiquette? maybe the only way you can express those big, big emotions of yours is by pressing the caps key and slamming your knuckles into the keyboard, but it makes you look stupid. but then again, maybe you talk that way. it's why i can't listen to Girlfight. the over-dramatic emphasis put on certain words like "HELLLOOOOOOOOOOO!?!? do you GET IT, people?" they talk with the caps lock on. with a slack jaw. i can't stand it. it's like nails on chalkboard, but maybe it's just a lady thing.

maybe you're not reading the entirety of my comments, but i don't care about what you think about the game. it escapes you, clearly. a lot of things escape me. i don't know anything about architecture. people say it's amazing. i don't get it, but when i say that i don't get it, i don't have the same stupid attitude you do.

Get off your pedestal right now and get over yourself.

You told me to go f^&$ myself, and I'm the one with a stupid attitude?

Look, since you obviously think that girls are icky because we talk like we have caps lock on all the time and it obviously JUST PISSES YOU OFF BECAUSE PEOPLE DO IT, doesn't mean I'm a prick. Or maybe it does, and it just takes one to know one. Because you certainly are one too. I can spot my own kind. I have prickdar.

All I did was express an opinion about this holy revered game that's different than yours, and you flamed me for it. Do not lie and say you didn't. You called me an idiot with a stupid attitude and told me to go f^&$ myself. Attacking someone over a videogame sure sounds like something that a prick would do, wouldn't it?

Because God forbid somebody not like a game made by the incredible Fumito Ueda. "You must be stupid if you don't get it." Maybe I don't get it, and maybe it's also because I don't like it. I'm allowed to not like the game, aren't I? Or would you rather me just say it's one of the greatest, if not the greatest video game of all time like everybody else does? Because then that would make me a liar and a prick.

Good day to you sir.

oh, i'm sorry, the real beef with me was over caps lock. i cannot believe that offends you so greatly. if the use of caps lock pisses you off to the point that you attack anyone that uses it, maybe you shouldn't be on the internet at all.

did you see that mr. kswindi? i went through a whole comment post and didn't even use one single capital letter. i hope that pleases his royal highness. i'll never use another capital letter again until you authorize it, captain malkovich. as a woman, i should learn my place.

you're right. i'm an asshole. caps lock is awesome. you're a genius. shadow of the colossus and no more heroes are like the same thing.

EDIT: lmao....okay. i just looked at your board post history. it looks like you have a serious chip on your shoulder over Team Ico, more specifically Udea. you brought him up like every post, i never mentioned him once. for someone who doesn't care for these games very much, you make it a point to mention how much you hate them every time they're mentioned. had i known you were so crazy i would never have bothered.
