Wikimedia Hackathon 2026/Participants

Milan, Italy – May 1-3, 2026

Participants are expected to arrange their own travel and accommodation unless they have received a scholarship or sponsorship support from within their organization (e.g., WMF staff or other affiliates). Food (lunch, dinner, drinks, and snacks) will be provided on the event dates.

Masks and COVID-19 self-tests will be available onsite, but their use is not mandatory.

Registration

General registration has closed and we have reached event capacity. Each person that attends the Hackathon is required to register, if you have not registered there will be no on-site registration available.

The Hackathon is primarily an on-site, in-person event. For those unable to attend in person, the opening session (including project presentations) and the closing showcase will be livestreamed on MediaWiki's YouTube Channel.

Catering (lunch, dinner, snacks, and drinks) will be provided during the event and covid-related equipment will be available upon request (e.g., self-test kits and masks).

A discounted hotel rate at the hackathon venue was available until April 13, 2026.

Scholarship / Sponsorship Application - CLOSED

Scholarship and staff sponsorship requests are now closed. Everyone who submitted a sponsorship request was notified of the selection committees decision on December 22, 2025.

The Wikimedia Foundation will be offering travel scholarships to a limited number of applicants, to include:

Roundtrip airfare between your city of residence and Milan, Italy - arriving on April 30, 2026 and departing on May 4, 2026.
Private accommodation at the conference hotel for up to 4 nights.
Limited Medical Insurance Coverage for any scholars traveling outside of their home country. Scholars residing in Italy will need to use their regular insurance coverage.
All meals will be provided for the duration of the event (lunch, drinks, snacks, and dinner will be provided on event days; breakfast will be provided by the hotel for guests staying there). In addition, dinner will be provided on Thursday (before the Hackathon officially kicks off) and breakfast to-go bags will be provided on Monday morning for those very early travelers.
Reimbursement will be provided to Milan to cover the costs of:
- Visa application fees.
- Ground transportation costs between your residence and home airport.
- Ground transportation between the relevant airport in Milan (LIN, MXP, BGY) and the conference hotel (only if shuttles are not provided).
- Per diem cost on travel days.
Costs not covered by the travel scholarship:
- Insurance for your personal possessions.
- Any vaccinations required to travel to/from Italy.

All scholarship applicants will be expected to abide by the Wikimedia Foundation Scholarship Travel Policy.

Timelines

Scholarship applications were accepted until November 28, 2025!

No late applications will be considered. All applications will be reviewed by a Scholarship Committee, composed of representatives from the Wikimedia Foundation and Wikimedia Italia. All applicants will be notified of the Scholarship Committee's decision by mid-December 2025. Applicants who have been selected to receive a scholarship will need to register for the 2026 Wikimedia Hackathon within two weeks of their notification of acceptance. Any scholarship recipients who fail to separately register for the event by the aforementioned deadline will risk losing their scholarship.

In early January, the Wikimedia Foundation's contracted travel agency, Amex GBT, will begin reaching out to confirmed scholars to book their flights and/or train.

Selection Criteria

The target audience of the Wikimedia Hackathon is experienced developers, who are familiar with the Wikimedia technology stack and environment. Onboarding newcomers is not the goal of this event. Therefore, the applicants should be able to demonstrate that they have already been engaged in technical activities in the Wikimedia movement.

The event also seeks to engage experienced members of the Wikimedia Technical community who have not previously had the opportunity to engage in Wikimedia Hackathons. Scholarships will serve to encourage the participation of a diverse cross-set of community members, including members who have historically been underrepresented due to a country of origin, gender identity, etc.

Hackathon participants are encouraged to describe how they will contribute to the hackathon, including their planned contribution or the project that they would like to undertake during the hackathon. The quality and feasibility of the applicant’s proposed contribution or project will be considered as part of the scholarship evaluation process.

Finally, the Scholarship Committee will seek a balance of skill sets and areas of focus, ensuring that a range of quality projects will be advanced during the hackathon.

Mobile contributions to Wikimedia Commons: Taking pictures for Wikipedia is one of the simplest ways of contributing. We have a fantastic team of volunteer developers from all over the world working on the Wikimedia Commons mobile android app. A lot of work still remains to improve code quality, add some of the most requested new features and promote the app among potential users. We need a team with a very diverse set of skills to keep making this app better.
Wikidata project ideas: They are around building games, tools for editing, developing interactive tours and tutorials, and more. These projects are small-sized, easy to begin, and can be completed during the Hackathon.

Online participation

The Wikimedia Hackathon 2026 is primarily an onsite event, and we couldn't enable full remote participation. However, there are various possibilities for people attending remotely to work on projects and interact with other participants:

Work on tasks: The tasks distribution and tracking takes place on the main work-board on Phabricator. Feel free to indicate that you are working on a task or to ask questions directly to others in Phabricator comments.

Interact with participants: The Hackathon social channels (IRC, Telegram, etc.) will be very active during the event, and the remote attendees are welcome to join these channels, talk about their projects and asks, and ask questions to the many technical contributors who are present on these channels.

Project presentations: The opening session (including project presentations) and the closing showcase will be livestreamed [link TBD]. Unfortunately, it will not be possible for remote attendees to participate in these sessions. Remote participants are invited to present their projects on the Hackathon social channels instead.

Program and workshops: The sessions / workshops that happen onsite during the event will not be recorded or broadcasted online. However, notes will be taken on Etherpad documents, and the speakers will share their slides on Wikimedia Commons. If you are particularly interested in a session, feel free to contact the speaker so they can send you more information.
