Description

The clipboard copy button on my site stopped working, only in Optimal filtering mode (works fine in Basic mode).

I tested previous uBO Lite versions and confirmed this regression started with version 2026.825.1619, it was working fine in the version before that.

Console error on click:
NotAllowedError: Failed to execute 'writeText' on 'Clipboard': The Clipboard API has been blocked because of a permissions policy applied to the current document. See https://crbug.com/414348233 for more details.
Image

The call stack traces back to ublock-filters.js (reflect / proxyApplyFn), which suggests a JavaScript Proxy is intercepting and replacing navigator.clipboard.writeText, rather than an actual native browser policy.

Note: I've since added a client-side fallback (document.execCommand) on my site, so the copy visually appears to still work for visitors. But the underlying Clipboard API call is still genuinely blocked and still throws the error above.

Additional observation (possible race condition): if I open DevTools and then reload the page with DevTools already open, the Clipboard API works normally. Without DevTools open at load time, it's blocked every time.

This affects every page on the site using this copy feature, not only the automatically-reported page.

On the attached screenshots, the clickable elements using the Clipboard API are circled in blue.

I can reproduce with uBOL, but not with uBO. The prevent-clipboard-write scriptlet is not being matched, so the issue is elsewhere, this need more investigation.

I think the issue is because the browser is supposed to ask the user whether to accept that the website access the clipboard through a site-settings prompt. If access is set to "allow", the issue disappear.

So far I do not understand why the prompt to ask is not displayed, I did see it once but I can't make it re-appear after resetting the site settings.

Thanks for looking into it. Some additional data points from my testing, in case it helps narrow things down :

I manually set the clipboard permission to "Allow" in Chrome's site settings for my domain, but the issue persists, I still get the exact same console error even with the permission explicitly set to Allow. So at least on my end, forcing the permission doesn't resolve it.

Also, from what I understand, writeText() shouldn't normally trigger a permission prompt, only readText() does, and I'm not using readText() here. And indeed, without uBOL (or with it set to Basic mode), it works fine without ever asking for permission. So I'm not sure the missing prompt is the actual root cause, just flagging it.

One more thing, as I mentioned in the original report, I noticed the bug doesn't reproduce if DevTools is already open before the page loads. Not sure if DevTools happened to be open during your "Allow" test, just flagging it in case that alone could affect the outcome, independently of the permission setting.
