PlayStation’s Creative Future Has Never Looked Bleaker

3 weeks, 2 days - Cutting ties with Kojima and poor Wolverine reviews are just the latest issues in a difficult generation for PlayStation. The platform's creartive future has never looked bleaker. It’s impossible to know how PlayStation bosses felt after seeing many critics walk away from Insomniac’s Wolverine with an apathetic shrug. A sub-80 on Metacritic is infamously considered a disaster in the triple-A space, and so Sony certainly won’t be thrilled, but it would be easy for the company to brush this away as an uncharacteristic miss. However, that would require wilfully ignoring the sad reality that PlayStation Studios is currently far from fertile ground for single-player adventures. Never has it been clearer that PlayStation Studios needs to find the next evolutionary stage of the “traditional” video game. Never has it been clearer that it needs its next Metal Gear Solid, the revolutionary Hideo Kojima game that defined what we could expect from PlayStation back in 1998.Now would be a very good time, then, for Sony to cancel Hideo Kojima’s PlayStation-exclusive spiritual successor to Metal Gear Solid...

Xbox & PlayStation Are Headed in Opposite Directions (Again) - Next-Gen Console Watch

3 weeks, 2 days - Welcome back to Next-Gen Console Watch! This week Daemon, Max, and Ryan discuss the diverging paths Xbox and PlayStation appear to be taking in this console generation, and it isn't the first time. Ever since the Xbox-PlayStation 2 days, the two competitors have found themselves trading wins every other console generation, with Sony seeing massive success with the PS2, then Microsoft with the Xbox 360 the following generation, and so on. Both have lost massive amounts of gamer good will in this gen, with Sony and Microsoft shuttering studios, cancelling projects, and pushing forward some very not-so-consumer-friendly business decisions. But now it looks like the tide is turning, with Xbox's new leadership, lead by Asha Sharma, trying to earn back fans' trust, and Sony stumbling again by dropping Hideo Kojima's mysterious Physint and the massively unpopular decision to stop producing physical media for first-party titles. Is this a new era for Microsoft? And is it time for Sony to start fresh with a new PlayStation 6 generation?Presented by AMD.Offer available through participating retailers only. 18+ only.Following purchase, product must be installed on system where coupon code will beredeemed. Is Physint Xbox's Chance to Win Gamers Back?

3 weeks, 4 days - When Xbox snatched Hideo Kojima’s PHYSINT out from under Sony’s nose, it felt less like a standard corporate pivot and more like WCW poaching Hulk Hogan at the onset of the Monday Night Wars. Snagging the auteur behind Metal Gear Solid, the very franchise that established PlayStation's reputation for prestige storytellingm, is a massive PR flex loaded with symbolism, proving Microsoft is eager to play the aggressive underdog. But as wrestling history proves, signing the biggest icon in the business doesn't guarantee a long-term win if internal hubris and ballooning budgets take over the show. This video breaks down the full story behind Hideo Kojima's PHYSINT moving to Xbox, Sony's surprising cancellation of Metal Gear Solid's spiritual successor, and what it means for the future of PlayStation and Xbox. With new Xbox CEO Asha Sharma securing Kojima Productions’ upcoming action-espionage game alongside OD, Microsoft is attempting a massive reset of its exclusive lineup. With Xbox looking ascendant, and Sony’s controversial shift away from single-player narrative games and the fallout from live-service missteps like Concord, are the two platform holders going to swap places soon? PlayStation Ditched Hideo Kojima's Physint Over Budget Concerns and Missed Deadlines - IGN Daily Fix

1 month - In today's Daily Fix:More details are coming to light surrounding Sony's decision to part ways with Hideo Kojima's Physint project. According to reports, the game was already missing deadlines, was in danger of being overbudget, and was still years away from release. Sony has had a string of high-profile flops and cancelations—especially in the live-service space—so it seems like the company was looking to trim budget wherever it could. In other news, another Sony-related property has popped up under a different name. What looks like a trailer for the extraction shooter Fairgame$ has appeared, but under the name Project Espresso. The curious can sign up for a private playtest coming soon. And finally, we have a breakdown of all the big new gaming releases of the week.
