The Raid is the final New Camp Quest that you need to complete in Gothic 1 Remake in order to be accepted as a New Camper and finish the Admission to the New Camp quest. After giving Diego an amended convoy supply list, Lares wants you to join the raid to steal their supplies between Old Camp and the New Mine. Read on for tips for getting new gear from Gorn, how to find the ambush site and how to start the ambush.

The Raid

You can use the below list of objectives to jump to the exact section of this guide page that you are looking for help with.

How to Start The Raid

To start the mission The Raid, you first need to complete the mission Something the Matter? for Lares by bringing him the list of suppies that Diego asks you to gather for the Old Mine as part of the Test of Faith quest.

G1R - Quests - New - TheRaid2.jpg

You Can Be Locked Out of This Mission

If you have already completed Test of Faith by giving Diego the list before taking it to Lares, you will be unable to undertake this mission, and you won't be able to join New Camp. You can still progress the story by joining one of the other camps.

Once you've completed Something the Matter?, reached Level 5, and also completed a number of side quests in New Camp related to the Admission to the New Camp quest, Lares will trust you enough to have you along for the raid on the Old Camp's convoy to the Old Mine.

He'll tell you that you can speak to Gorn to get some equipment for the raid, and then you need to find Wedge at the ambush site.

Optional - Get a New Weapon from Gorn

  • In-game objective - "Gorn could give me a better weapon."

Gorn is a Mercenary who hangs around in the Free Mine. As you walk out of Lares' hut, if you look to the left you can see him across the other side of the mine.

Make your way across the quarry and then have a chat to him.

G1R - Quests - New - TheRaid4.png

He'll ask you which type of weapon you want to take with you for the raid. You can choose between:

  • A sword (Judgment Sword, 30 Edge Damage, 20 Strength Requirement)
  • A mace (Steel Tongue, 29 Blunt Damage, 26 Strength Requirement)
  • A bow (Field Bow, 28 Point Damage, 18 Dex Req)

Need More Strength or Dexterity?

If you need some more training in a stat to wield the above items, you can talk to Lares or Diego to improve your Strength or Dexterity, at the cost of one Learning Point per Stat.

Now that you're geared up, it's time to go find Wedge.

Find Wedge at the Ambush Site

  • In-game objective - "Wedge is waiting for me at the ambush site."

Start by making your way back to Old Camp. Then, when standing outside the North entrance to Old Camp, cross over the stone bridge and then take an immediate left towards the Old Mine.

G1R - Quests - New - TheRaid7-1.png

The path should be free from creatures after your previous trip to the Old Mine for the supply list. Once you reach the bend in the road, you should see some guards standing around some wagons in the mud ahead. That's the convoy.

G1R - Quests - New - TheRaid8-2.png

In the forest ahead of you, looking down from a small ridge above the path is a small group of Bandits. Walk up the ridge to find Wedge and have a chat with him.

G1R - Quests - New - TheRaid9.jpg

He says he knew that you were the freshy that Lares mentioned - you're making an impression in this camp! He again mentions that it's important not to kill any of the guards, as Lares doesn't want to start a war. You're just going to incapacitate them.

Now it's time to go down to the convoy and distract the guards.

How to Distract the Old Camp Convoy Guards

  • In-game objective - "I gotta distract the guards."

G1R - Quests - New - TheRaid10.jpg

Walk out of the forest on the side of the convoy closer to the mine than Old Camp. There's only one guard who you need to talk to, and the conversation will start immediately when you get close to him.

He's going to tell you to move along, before asking why he doesn't recognise you.

G1R - Quests - New - TheRaid11.jpg

If you select the "Just a digger" or "Never mind me, just passing through" dialogue options, he will find you suspicious and call his men to draw swords on you. This will also prompt the guards to discover your Bandit ambushers early, leaving your backup at a severe disadvantage.

This is a more difficult way to approach this fight, as your Bandit friends will likely be overwhelmed. If that happens, eventually when you get knocked down one of the guards will execute you, forcing you to reload a save. It is possible to defeat the guards in this scenario, but it is much more difficult.

If you choose the "Yeah, they just threw me in. What happened? Broke an axle?" option, the guard will become distracted with the job of fixing the wagon. He'll suggest to his men that they go into the forest to find some timber to fix the thing.

This will separate the group of guards, and gives your Bandit mates the opportunity to get in the first attacks. Once swords are drawn, you should be free to start swinging. Your group will be at an advantage with this strategy, making it much easier to successfully complete the raid.

Ambush Combat Tips

This is a big group fight against some pretty tough human enemies. Having a new weapon from Gorn will definitely help, and you can choose to stay at a distance if you don't want to get immediately belted by 3 guards at once, but just know that this is a messy fight.

G1R - Quests - New - TheRaid12.jpg

You're likely to go down during this encounter at least once, just because the guards hit quite hard. Thankfully you can get up after a while unless you've been executed.

Healing Mid-Fight

You can equip some healing potions or food to your inventory shortcut buttons so that you can heal mid-fight. This should help get your health back up if you get knocked down, or even just stay healthy when you get a moment mid-battle to heal.

If you want to fight with your melee weapon of choice, the normal tactics of dodging attacks and then getting your hits in afterwards apply here. The biggest danger you need to watch out for though is the sheer number of enemies that might try and attack you at once, especially if you angered the guards rather than duping them. Getting an opening to attack is much more difficult when you're being confronted by multiple enemies at once.

G1R - Quests - New - TheRaid14.jpg

If you do have the attention of multiple guards, make sure you're ready to dodge when they catch up to you, and maybe try to lure them towards a group of your allies. That way your friends might be able to damage your pursuers for you while you keep them occupied.

If you have any magic training as well, like with Firebolt, you can use this rune while backing up to attack your enemies while retreating at the same time.

A Note About Lethality

Lares and Wedge both impress upon you that it is important not to kill these soldiers, but it's not something you will need to actively worry about. The only way to permanently kill these guards is to execute them once they're downed, and the option to do this is greyed out for these particular enemies during this quest.

If you're in a position where no one is targeting you, you have choices when it comes to how you engage the enemy now. If you're staying with melee combat, keep in mind that you can attack enemies from behind (even if they're guarding) to help out your allies. You may also choose to attack without lock-on in this fight, just so you have more freedom when it comes to where you're aiming and placing your attacks. The choice is yours.

Unlike you and and your Bandit friends, the guards won't stand back up after being downed for a short while. Once the last guard is lying down on the ground, the fight will be over!

Aftermath of the Raid

  • In-game objective - "I should talk to Wedge."

It will take a minute for your Bandits to stand back up (if they were downed) and take their places around the convoy. While they're doing this, have a walk around the battlefield and loot all the guards on the ground. You should pick up a few weapons, some junk, food and Ore Nuggets from across the various bodies.

G1R - Quests - New - TheRaid16.jpg

You Can Loot Your Friends Too!

If there are any Bandits on the ground too, you can also loot them! Looting downed bodies is apparently a morally OK thing to do in Gothic, even if they're you're friends, so no one will get upset with you.G1R - Quests - New - TheRaid17.jpg

Once Wedge is standing at the convoy, go over and have a chat with him. He'll either say that you did a terrible or great job distracting your prey, but this won't affect the outcome of the mission.

Editorial Note

From Kerry Palmer, Guides Editor ⚔️

I tried speaking to Wedge immediately after he got up off the ground and before he reached his mark in front of the wagons. This resulted in him refusing to talk to me at all and I had to reload my save, so it's probably for the best to leave Wedge alone until he's standing still at the front of the wagons.

Either way, he'll tell you that you can now go back to Lares and tell him it went well.

Report Back to Lares

  • In-game objective - "Lares should hear about this."

Nearing the Point of No Return

You're near the end of the quest, but remember! Completing Admission to the New Camp will immediately disqualify you from completing the Admission to the Old Camp or Admission to the Swamp Camp quests. Once you're in, you're in, and you'll move forward through the game with that allegiance. If you would prefer to join a different camp, or at least see what the other camps have to offer first, don't finish this quest yet!

Head back to the New Camp and go speak to Lares. Give him the good news and he'll be so thrilled, he'll make you a member of the New Camp on the spot! This will mark the end of both The Raid and Admission to the New Camp quests.

G1R - Quests - New - TheRaid20.jpg

You'll earn 1500 Experience Points, as well as the Bandit's Dress armor. As an added bonus, because you're now part of the New Camp, the Blackmailers standing guard at the bridge won't hassle you anymore!

Old Camp Quests Canceled

Completing this mission will have the side-effect of cancelling the Admission to the Old Camp quest, along with any associated Casting Shadows quests for some people in Old Camp. The Shadows don't want any of your help anymore now that you're a New Camper.

Now that you're part of the Bandits, it will be difficult to gain the Old Camp's trust to let you into the Old Camp castle if you still want to complete the A Letter from the Fire Mages quest. However, Cronos the Water Mage may be able to help you gain entry. You can find him in the center of the Free Mine.

G1R - Quests - New - TheRaid21.jpg

Talk to Lares once again and he will give you a new mission in the swamp camp called “The Brotherhood’s Plan”. When you start the quest, this will also be the start of Chapter 2: The Minecrawlers' Nest.
