Reviews ethics statement How we test

SiteGround is expensive compared to other web hosts we’ve tested, but its high-quality WordPress tools, exceptional customer support and user-friendly server management make it worth the cost. I especially recommend SiteGround for business websites and online stores, as its excellent uptime keeps your website consistently available to customers. Even small businesses, such as modest content and e-commerce sites or solopreneurs, can benefit — SiteGround’s pricey plans just mean you’ll want your site to generate money.

I put SiteGround through its paces by signing up for a plan, analyzing its registration process, scrutinizing site setup and management tools, tracking uptime and server speeds to gauge reliability and testing its customer support. Ultimately, I was impressed with SiteGround, finding it an intuitive web host with best-in-class customer support.

But its server speeds are slow for international and mobile users, even with performance-enhancing tools activated. However, you can bypass this problem using third-party tools to improve site speed. Additionally, its plans renew at much higher prices than your initial subscription term, making it a tough sell for casual users. Nevertheless, SiteGround’s exceptional customer support, useful proprietary WordPress plugins and user-friendly design make it one of the best web hosts on the planet.

Pros & Cons

  • Excellent WordPress tools for fast, easy site setup
  • Useful site speed-boosting tools
  • Handy WordPress security-enhancing features
  • Top-notch customer service
  • Renewal costs on WordPress plans can be high, especially for hobby sites with no monetization
  • Website builder plans have minimal storage

Value: Great for online businesses, mediocre for casual users

Key takeaway: SiteGround’s WooCommerce plans offer incredible value, making it an excellent choice for hosting online stores and business websites. WordPress and shared hosting prices are a bit high for personal sites, but plans may still be worthwhile for folks with a flexible budget who want outstanding customer service.

Shared hosting and WordPress hosting

SiteGround primarily offers shared WordPress hosting, which is usually ideal for blogs, for-fun hobby sites and professional portfolios. But its long-term costs are expensive if your site isn’t monetized, so I recommend other hosts if you’re building a personal website that’s not generating revenue and don’t want to pay a premium for superb support and reliability. Upfront pricing is a great value, similar to comparable plans from top companies such as Ionos and Hostinger. However, renewal costs are much higher than what competitors charge.

Shared hosting plans keep prices low by dividing a server’s resources (such as RAM and CPU power) between numerous websites. SiteGround further simplifies website creation on its shared hosting plans through a WordPress setup wizard and onboarding plugin, making it ideal for beginners. Server sharing limits storage and bandwidth, so users with complex or high-traffic sites should consider alternatives such as cloud hosting.

Notably, SiteGround’s WooCommerce plans cost the same as its regular WordPress plans despite including extra features such as automatic WooCommerce installation and updates. Combined with SiteGround’s excellent hosting tools and customer service, it’s an appealing option for starting an online store. But for casual users seeking web hosting for a portfolio site or a for-fun blog that isn’t generating any income, there are budget-friendly alternatives.

E-commerce and AI hosting

SiteGround offers an e-commerce website builder with reasonably priced plans compared to other rivals. But the cheapest plan, Sell, has a highly restrictive storage limit. You can get more storage for similar prices with a website builder plan from Hostinger or Squarespace, with the latter offering unlimited storage on all plans.

SiteGround offers AI hosting via AI Studio plans, with access to multiple models, including Google Gemini and Claude, or the company’s own Coderick AI, a tool for building websites and apps through a series of prompts. Unfortunately, storage is minimal even on the most expensive Coderick AI plan.

The AI tools in SiteGround’s WordPress, website builder and AI Studio plans may not have as many customization options as Coderick AI, but the higher storage makes SiteGround’s WordPress and website builder plans more valuable for average users creating traditional websites, whereas Coderick AI might benefit beginners making apps or leaning heavily into artificial intelligence.

Ease of use: Ideal for both first-time website owners and experienced WordPress users

Key takeaway: SiteGround’s transparent pricing, guided WordPress setup and intuitive server management tools make it simple for anyone from first-time website owners to experienced WordPress developers looking to quickly spin up a website.

Immediately upon purchasing a plan, I understood why SiteGround has long dominated lists of the best WordPress hosts, as its website creation and management processes are user-friendly for first-time website owners while still providing the flexibility advanced WordPress users need.

Purchase process

Purchasing a SiteGround plan is relatively straightforward, with transparent pricing and a simple checkout process (albeit one not quite as streamlined as Hostinger’s). SiteGround’s pricing pages clearly list both the introductory and renewal costs of individual plans, with renewals listed both above and below the introductory rate in decently sized text — something that isn’t always true of other hosts.

Checkout is a two-page process: a domain selection page, followed by a page for creating your account and entering payment information. There are some upsells on this last page — more than I’ve encountered during checkout with companies such as Hostinger, but not enough to be egregious. None of the upsells are pre-selected, so you can easily scroll right past them.

Account management

SiteGround makes account management easy, with a homepage featuring prominent boxes for your existing services. Overall, the experience is quite welcoming, even for newcomers.

The top menu includes links for managing your websites, billing and additional services. I was pleased to see the billing link — other companies including Hostinger often hide this in a dropdown menu — but mildly confused by the lack of a domain management link. Domains are instead nestled into the Services page, which is unintuitive but easy to adjust to.

WordPress website creation tools

SiteGround offers proprietary tools to help you quickly build a WordPress site, regardless of your previous experience. Site creation options include using the WordPress-based website builder (a separate tool from the drag-and-drop designer) and building a WordPress website from scratch. You can also migrate an existing WordPress site to SiteGround in a few clicks with WordPress Automigration or pay a small fee for the SiteGround team to migrate the site for you.

I chose to build a site from scratch and was launched into SiteGround’s WordPress Wizard, which suggests themes and plugins based on your site’s stated purpose. The wizard’s suggestions impressed me, recommending some of the same themes and plugins I’d suggest for first-time WordPress users.

SiteGround further wowed me with its WordPress onboarding plugin, where you can find information about your hosting plan and quickly access various tools. While this isn’t as easy to follow as Hostinger’s checklist-style onboarding process, I appreciate its emphasis on configuring the speed and security optimizer plugins right away.

Site Tools for server management

You manage your server through the proprietary Site Tools section, accessible from the Websites page of your account center. Site Tools uses a simple, modern layout to provide access to everything you’ll need — including clearly labeled links to things like security and domain management — without feeling cluttered or overwhelming.

The DNS Zone Editor — where you’ll do things such as updating your records to verify your domain for email marketing — is especially beginner-friendly, including basic information about how DNS records work and a link to further information.

Like Hostinger’s hPanel, SiteGround’s Site Tools is more intuitive and pleasant to use than the industry-standard cPanel. However, this proprietary system may cause problems if you ever want to transfer your site to a new host, as some web hosting companies’ free migration service only applies to sites using cPanel.

Performance: Excellent uptime, less-than-spectacular site speed

Key takeaway: SiteGround’s servers have excellent uptime, ensuring that your website remains accessible. The default server speed isn’t ideal, but SiteGround provides tools you can use to improve it.

Server performance dictates how your visitors experience your website. To understand this, I spent one week tracking two key performance metrics for my test site:

  • Uptime: The percentage of time your website spends online and is accessible to users. Users who can’t access your site may go elsewhere; the best web hosts offer an uptime guarantee of at least 99.9% to prevent this.
  • Site speed: The number of seconds your website takes to load. Experts recommend aiming for loading times of two seconds or less, as conversion rates decline by 1% to 3% for every additional 100ms after the two-second mark.

SiteGround had 100% uptime during my testing week, outmatching its guarantee and other top web hosts, including Hostinger. Site speed, however, wasn’t great for mobile devices or users outside of the U.S. and Europe.

Uptime

SiteGround’s uptime guarantee is surprisingly difficult to find, but customer service confirmed that the company offers the industry-standard 99.9% uptime guarantee. Accordingly, your website shouldn’t experience more than 10 minutes of downtime due to server issues per week. I monitored my test site with Better Stack for one week, and it had 100% uptime, suggesting that SiteGround may actually exceed its 99.9% guarantee. Additionally, customer service told me that while SiteGround’s contracts only promise 99.9% uptime, the average server uptime is closer to 99.99%.

Site speed

I used WebPageTest to simulate mobile and desktop visits to my test site from various locations around the globe over five days, resulting in the following average speeds:

CDN on vs. offWeb page typeUSUKGermanyIndiaDubaiAustraliaGlobal
CDN offDesktop1.43 seconds1.97 seconds2.26 seconds3.54 seconds3.36 seconds3.14 seconds2.61 seconds
CDN offMobile3.35 seconds3.83 seconds3.56 seconds5.10 seconds5.10 seconds4.54 seconds4.24 seconds
CDN onDesktop1.97 seconds2.06 seconds2.04 seconds5.14 seconds3.91 seconds3.99 seconds3.18 seconds
CDN onMobile2.88 seconds3.22 seconds3.49 seconds5.75 seconds5.32 seconds4.65 seconds4.21 seconds

Together, the global mobile and desktop averages create an overall average site speed of 3.25 seconds, higher than the recommended two-second maximum but lower than Hostinger’s average of 3.56 seconds. It’s also higher than the 2.81-second average I experienced when testing SiteGround in 2024. The mobile average of 4.24 seconds is especially troublesome since 64.35% of all internet traffic now comes from mobile devices.

I enabled SiteGround’s CDN and most recommended features in the Speed Optimizer plugin to determine how they improved site speed. The overall speed across devices with the CDN activated — 3.69 seconds — was actually worse than the speed without it, thanks in large part to major slowdowns in India, Dubai and Australia. These results are abnormal, so you might get more benefit from activating the CDN on your own site, but you may be better off getting a separate CDN or upgrading to the paid version of SiteGround’s CDN to improve your site speed.

If your audience is outside of the US, you can request your site be moved to a non-US server. This can improve site speed for international users by letting their devices pull data from a server near their geographical locations rather than being forced to retrieve data from the other side of the world.

Performance tools

Every SiteGround plan includes three core tools for improving your site’s performance: a CDN, or content delivery network, a proprietary caching system and a speed optimization plugin for WordPress. While the first two are common inclusions in most plans from other top web hosting companies, the speed optimizer plugin includes performance-enhancing features you’d have to separately acquire a plugin for with hosting from other companies such as Hostinger.

The CDN boosts site speed for international users by storing static (infrequently updated) website information in a series of interconnected web servers worldwide. This lets users’ devices pull from a data center near their geographical location, which may be faster than retrieving data from the other side of the globe. You have to manually activate this protocol to experience its benefits.

SuperCacher, SiteGround’s caching system, stores data in a special high-speed storage layer called a cache so it can be accessed more quickly. SuperCacher’s base caching system is automatically enabled, with the option to add an extra layer of caching through Site Tools.

The speed optimizer plugin lets you configure your caching systems, with additional tools for image and code optimization. The settings are clearly explained and easy to enable, though some — like image compression — can take a while to fully implement on your site.

Security: Some of the best in the business

Key takeaway: SiteGround goes beyond standard security features — such as SSL certification and firewall protection — with a Security Optimizer plugin for WordPress that provides features you’d otherwise need to buy separately.

Every SiteGround hosting plan includes the following security protocols and tools:

  • SSL certification: A protocol that encrypts data sent to and from your website, such as messages submitted through a contact form. Browsers, VPNs and Google use SSL certification to identify secure sites, making it an essential security feature for any site you want people to be able to find and access.
  • Firewall: Software that scans website traffic for signs of malicious intent and attempts to block anything deemed suspicious. You can think of it as the website equivalent of an HVAC filter, blocking harmful pollutants while allowing the good stuff (air, or in this case website traffic) into your space.
  • DDoS or distributed denial of service protection: Protocols used to identify and block floods of malicious traffic, which are used to forcibly shut down websites by overwhelming their servers.
  • Automated daily backups: Off-site replicas of your website to ensure that you can quickly recover your data if your site is damaged or shut down for any reason, such as a botched WordPress update.

You’ll get best-in-class security features from SiteGround. Some companies such as Ionos have similar offerings, though its backups are only kept for 14 days. What sets SiteGround apart is the Security Optimizer plugin, which can help you set up useful security measures such as two-factor authentication. Like the speed optimizer plugin, its security optimizer offers clear explanations for every setting and toggle, so you can instantly enable or disable them.

Customer service: Fast and helpful across every support channel

Key takeaway: From its self-serve knowledge base to its remarkably fast and helpful phone support, SiteGround consistently provides some of the best customer service in the web hosting industry.

I spent an afternoon testing every aspect of SiteGround’s customer support — including its knowledge base, live chat and phone lines — for speed and helpfulness. SiteGround impressed me at every turn, with excellent tutorials and knowledgeable agents who were frankly a delight to work with. The entire experience was a breath of fresh air after dealing with slow, low-quality human support from web hosting companies such as Hostinger.

Knowledge base and tutorials

SiteGround's knowledge base is full of helpful tutorials, guides, and FAQs.Screenshot by Dianna Gunn/CNET

SiteGround’s knowledge base includes two documentation categories: Knowledge Base for short answers to specific questions, and Tutorials for more involved guides on things such as WordPress setup. Both are organized into clear categories to help you find what you need at a glance, with a search bar for finding specific answers. Individual articles use a great mix of beginner-friendly language and images. However, I wish the tutorials section included more video tutorials like those found in Hostinger’s Learning Lab.

Direct communication

SiteGround offers 24/7 support via live chat and phone, with a support ticket option available for certain types of queries. I tested every channel and found SiteGround’s customer service representatives consistently fast, polite and helpful, demonstrating why SiteGround has won four Stevie Awards for customer service.

You can access the chatbot at any time via the top toolbar of your account center — it’s helpful, near-instantly pulling answers from SiteGround’s knowledge base with links to further information. It sent me to a separate customer service portal when I asked to speak with a person, which is unusual since most bots I’ve used will connect you to human support within the same window.

The primary support portal asked me to select a category for my query, then offered me links to both live chat and phone. The live chat option connected me with a support representative within one minute, and the representative provided fast, high-quality advice, resolving multiple issues for me in under 10 minutes. This was much better than my experience with Hostinger, where I’m not even sure a human reviewed my case.

Phone support was equally pleasant, connecting me with a polite, knowledgeable representative who resolved my queries in roughly three minutes.

SiteGround’s support ticket system was harder to test, as it’s only offered for certain issues, such as configuring auto-updates. I submitted a ticket asking SiteGround to disable auto-updates (which I don’t recommend unless you’re comfortable conducting updates yourself) and was notified that SiteGround staff had disabled them 15 minutes later. This is incredibly fast for email support, with other web hosts typically having taken more than an hour to respond to support tickets during my tests.

Reputation

SiteGround has a Trustpilot ranking of 4.9 out of 5 based on over 30,000 reviews, with most reviews citing similarly excellent customer service experiences to my own. This suggests that SiteGround consistently provides excellent support to its users.

Final thoughts: SiteGround is an exceptional web host, but pricing can be high for casual users

SiteGround offers some of the best tools of any web host I’ve tested, including beginner-friendly systems for creating, optimizing and maintaining a WordPress site. Combined with SiteGround’s top-tier customer service, these tools make it worth paying the unusually high renewal costs for WordPress hosting if you plan to monetize your website, and especially if you’ll be running an online store. Even if your website isn’t generating any income, SiteGround could be worthwhile if you’ve got a big budget and want reliable hosting with top-notch customer service.

However, you may want to choose a web host with more affordable long-term pricing, such as Ionos, if you’re not planning to make money from your site. Likewise, if you want cheaper web hosting and don’t expect to need human-assisted customer service, an alternative such as Hostinger might be better — or check out our guide to the best cheap web hosting services.
